lol, I don't know what to tell you cuz we have encountered that same thing. Ours wasn't as drastic although I am sure it would have been had I not caught them (yes they have both done this) in the act. We kept ours, but used them as play shoes.
ok- so what was it colored with...if it's crayon then those Mr. Clean rubber things will remove it or if it's marker then soft scrub- now if it is permenant....well.....your screwed ;)
If it was me I would give him some bright primary colored markers or paint and let him go nuts....then you would have #2 and a FUN pair of shoes.

My little artist, I say keep them, but paint his bedroom door that he also clored black!!!!

I say number 2 as well. I believe that he has strong chances of being on "Project Runway" some day!
